1A Across America

1A Across America is a two-year collaboration to incorporate more local and regional viewpoints into the national conversation. Leading up to the 2020 general election, 1A’s production team is working with six public media stations deeply rooted in their communities to bring each region’s underreported issues and concerns to 1A’s national audience.

This project seeks to rectify identified gaps in national news coverage. 1A Across America is telling nuanced, deeply sourced stories from communities that have been underreported on a national level. These will be heard through on-air discussions and interviews, field reporting and live events.

Across America Live Events

In August 2019, Across America went to Minneapolis to hear from Somali Americans about what they would say if they had the ear of the nation. We teamed up with partner station MPR and a new nonprofit news organization they’re working with, Sahan Journal, to talk about how the political conversation around Somali Americans has changed in the last couple of years. We broadcast highlights of the conversation on 1A.
